In cases of emergencies where your water is polluted and needs purification before use follow these steps:

1. Clarify: If the water is dirty and cloudy, don’t drink it! You will need to make it clear by passing it through filter paper, fine cloth, or another type of filter. Allow the water to settle after filtering it and then draw the clear water on top. Always remember that filtered or clear settled water should be disinfected before use.

2. Disinfect: There are three methods of disinfecting water –
a.       Boiling Method: Bring water to rolling boil for 3 to 5 minutes. This will kill most water borne microorganisms. Prolonging the boil for more than 3 to 5 minutes may concentrate toxic contaminants if present.
b.      Bleach Method: Add 8 drops of fresh liquid household chlorine bleach (5 to 6% sodium hypochlorite) to every 4 liters (1 gallon) of water. This will kill most microorganisms. Please keep in mind that only bleach without thickeners, scents, or additives should be used and that the use of bleach does not help with toxic contamination.
