Author to Read: Il Sung Na

Thursday, August 31, 2017

We recently started checking out books by Il Sung Na from the library. His books are easy for young kids to understand, have fun illustrations and teach a lesson. Na's stories aren't pressed down with facts or figures, but subtly help children learn something new.

In Il Sung Na's Welcome Home, Bear, bear decides to find a new home and explores different habitats. Bear ultimately decides his own habitat is the best. Kids are subtly introduced to homes, habitats and that animals have certain needs. To learn more about, Welcome Home, Bear, click here.

A Book of Babies explores the different types of babies, where they live, how they interact with their parents.  I loved how the story was entertaining for young kids and introduced them to the variety of babies that there are in the world. It was easy to read and kept my young kids' attention. To learn more about, A Book of Babies, click here.

Bird, Balloon, Bear is a cute tale where a bear and a bird want to find a friend. Bird wants to be a friend to bear, but discovers he is too late. Bear has made friends with a balloon. The lesson in this book is subtle - bird shouldn't have been afraid to make a new friend and should have done it immediately and bear should have realized he can have more than one friend, look all around for a friend (it might come in unexpected places) and inanimate objects aren't lasting friends (toys can't take the place of true friendship).  To learn more about Bird, Balloon, Bear, click here.

Back to School Books

Wednesday, August 30, 2017

Kids are back at school or getting ready to go back to school. There are so many excellent books available that help kids get excited about learning and going to school. Reading books about what kids are experiencing can help them adjust and to get excited about a new school year. Here are some of our favorites:

We love the "Mouse" books by Laura Numeroff. If You Take A Mouse to School explores what happens if you take a mouse to school and what adventures you might have. To learn more, click here.

Henry's 100 Days of Kindergarten explores Henry's year in kindergarten. This is one of our household's favorite book to read. The story is engaging and fun to young ones. To learn more, click here.

Olivia goes to school, but she has to use her own Olivia style to make things a little fun. Olivia tells her classmates about the time she saved the circus. Olivia books are fun, clever, and unique. We love reading the adventures about Olivia. To learn more about how Olivia Saves the Circus, click here.

Winnie puts Waldorf in "Disobedience" School to help prepare him/her for school. I liked how the author has Winnie help prepare her dog to get ready for school as a way to help herself get excited for her first day of kindergarten. We enjoy reading this story and I am sure you will too. To learn more about Winnie & Waldorf Disobedience School, click here.

What books do you like to read to your kids to help them get excited for school?

Miss Whitaker Opens Her Heart Review

Tuesday, August 29, 2017

Sarah Whitaker and her Aunt sail from England to Australia to live with her father on a sprawling sheep ranch. When she arrives, Sarah learns of her father's untimely death. Sarah learns how to live in a land filled with exiles from England and how to manage a sheep farm despite many obstacles and challenges. Her heart becomes hardened and she feels like she can't trust anyone. Sarah gets upset when a new neighbor, Daniel Burton, purchases the land next to her. As Sarah gets to know Daniel, her heart begins to open, but can she look past Daniel's troubled past?

Miss Whitaker Opens Her Heart is one of my top favorite books by Jennifer Moore. Moore was able to describe the wilds, beauties and landscaping of Australia in such a way that I almost felt like I was in Australia. I also loved the characterization of the characters. All of the characters had flaws, but you were still able to move past them and into the story. The story was descriptive and engaging. I was so engaged that I read it within a day. I would highly recommend this story for all regency readers. To learn more, click here.

Patterns of Evidence: The Exodus

Thursday, August 24, 2017

Exodus is the second book in the Old Testament and tells the story of how the Israelites leave slavery in Egypt. Patterns of Evidence: The Exodus. The film takes a scientific approach to investigate the events in Exodus and tries to engage the audience to decide for themselves if the Bible is real history or myth. I love how the documentary allows for you to decide what you believe for yourself and I encourage you to read Exodus on your own. This film won 13 awards in the film festival circuit in 2014 including a Gold Remi Award Winner for Best Director at the Worldfest Houston Intl. Film Festival, the Gold Crown Award for Best Picture and Best Documentary at ICVM 2014, and Official Selection at the Soho International Film Festival in New York. It allows viewpoints from all sides to be heard in a respectful way while asking honest questions of the Bible and scholars’ views. It does not preach and lets the evidence speak for itself. This allows the film to be very shareable with those of different viewpoints. To buy a copy, click here (Use Discount Code MK1 for $3 off). To learn more and watch the movie trailers, click here.

Planning for the Eclipse

Tuesday, August 15, 2017

The Solar Eclipse is coming on Monday August 21st and the path runs through Idaho. Idaho residents have been told to expect a lot of traffic and that the hotels that are near the path have been booked for a long time. There are a couple of things that you can do to make the Eclipse experience easier and more fun:

1. If you haven't already gotten your Eclipse glasses, get them NOW! There are stores that are carrying Eclipse glasses, but make sure that they are one of the approved vendors. We bought ours off of Amazon made by Thousand Oaks Optical. To learn more about approved vendors by NASA, click here.

2. Plan to get your groceries ahead of time. Areas close to the Eclipse may be filled with travelers stopping by grocery stories to pick up snacks, food items, etc if you get everything you need ahead of time you can avoid the crowds. You may also want to have all your food planned out and able to prepare yourself - restaurants may be overcrowded.

3. Plan your route to see the Eclipse. There are many theories of what routes to take. Plan ahead and make sure you have a hard copy of maps and directions.

4. Plan to be patient with traffic. Traffic is going to be increased as people rush to get a prime spot for the Eclipse.

5.  Fill-up on gas before the Eclipse weekend. Gas stations may be overloaded. Fill up on gas prior to the weekend.

What are some of your tips?

The Secret of the India Orchid Review

Tuesday, August 8, 2017

In The Secret of the India Orchard by Nancy Campbell Allen, Anthony Blake plans to court his best friend's sister, Sophia Elliot, but his plans are put on hold when he needs to resume his role as an undercover spy for the crown to recover a missing document that lists the names of the entire British Spy network. Anthony cuts all ties to Sophia and pretends to be a playboy in order to figure out what happened to the document. Sophia is confused and heartbroken. She decides to try seek healing in India, but instead finds a mystery with a missing sea captain, murder, kidnapping and Anthony asking numerous questions.

The Secret of the India Orchard was well written, clean and interesting. I enjoyed the characters and the descriptive tale. The main characters were instantly likeable and intriguing. I wanted to find out what happened to them and where their story was headed. For romance readers, this story is a must. To learn more about The Secret of the India Orchard, click here.

Tuesday, August 1, 2017

I like entering low to moderate entry giveaways and I share each month some of the blog giveaways I've entered and found online. Check back often to see if I have posted more giveaways. I try and post them as I find them.
