Julia is exiled to Jerusalem to live with her great aunt, Anna, by her parents after refusing to marry an older man. Julia learns of Anna's life and discovers that Anna's life is full of love, peace and faith. Anna shares with Julia the promise of the Savior's miraculous birth and life.
H.B. Moore has written several novels about scripture heroines: Ruth, Daughters of Jared, Esther the Queen. This is the first time I've picked up one of her books on scripture heroines. I've read some of H.B. Moore's other books and short stories. The novel was an interesting portrayal on Anna. Since Anna is such a minor character in the New Testament and so little is known about her, it was interesting to see the character in the spotlight and how she demonstrated her faith in Christ throughout her life. The story started off as a slow read for me, but I did find the tale interesting and it made Jerusalem come to life for me. I became more invested in the story the more the author delved into what she imagined could have been Anna's past. It was also interesting to see the limitations of woman in ancient Jerusalem and the dangers in living in little towns. Woman married based off of what their parents wanted and what was economically best. Anna finds ways to help contribute to those around her and shakes off the worries of remarrying for the sake of society's expectations. She also labors in the temple and helps her neighbors. Anna is a role model for women to go with what is right rather than what is expected by societal constraints. To learn more Anna The Prophetess, click here.
