Learning About Nature and Shapes
Wednesday, September 20, 2017
Two days a week my son is in a preschool co-op. We also do our own preschool homeschool for an hour three days a week. Last week we talked about Nature and shapes. We did a nature scavenger hunt finding things in nature that corresponded with a shape: a circle, triangle and square. We then collected a few nature samples outside to make a nature collage on the letter N.
After we made the N collage, we talked about different types of shapes. We pressed shaped in paint onto paper using Washable Crayola Paint. I like using Crayola Washable Paint. It's easy to clean up and doesn't stain clothes. We got the idea from More Than Counting: Math Activities for Preschool and Kindergarten. I use this book for all of our math activities. It make math fun for toddlers and preschoolers. It also gives me guidelines in what questions to ask per each activity and adapting it for different levels. My kids love doing the activities from it.
We also worked on writing the letter N and learning about the color green. To go along with our theme, we read Plant the Little Seed by Christie Matheson. Plant the Little Seed tells how a seed grows into a plant. It's also interactive! Readers are asked to clap, tap, wave and more. It's such a fun book and great for younger audiences. I already put some of Matheson's other books on hold at the library and this might be adding it to our home library soon! To learn more about this book, click here.

Good Night, Hockey Fans Review
Tuesday, September 19, 2017
Goodnight, Hockey Fans by Andrew Larsen shares the story of a little boy who doesn't want to go to sleep. The little boy would rather stay-up and finish watching a hockey game. He decides to listen to the game on the radio in bed and dreams he is on the ice with his favorite team.
This is a must-have for little hockey fans. The story is relevant to kids who have wanted to stay-up past their bedtime to find out what happens when their favorite sports team is playing. I also liked that the boy was able to dream his own ending to the hockey game and created a better ending with him making the final score. It's a good bedtime story for kids especially if they're not able to finish watching or doing something. I like that kids can dream or imagine their own ending. It's a clever concept. The illustrations are attractive for young readers. The pace of the book is also nice - it's not too wordy and easy to read out loud. This is a fun book for young kids. To learn more, click here.
Please note that this post contains affiliate links. I was also provided with a free digital copy to review the book. This has not influenced my opinion.

Havencross Review
Tuesday, September 12, 2017
In Julie Daines' Havencross - When a scandal surfaces around her father, Elaine Cardinham and her parents escape the busy London scene and head back to their country home, Havencross. Elaine hasn't been back to Havencross since the mysterious disappearance of her brother and since she rejected the marriage proposal of Gareth Kemp. As Elaine meets a mysterious ghost, she starts unraveling pieces of her past and venturing into dangerous truths.
Havencross is the second book, I've read by Julie Daines and you can tell that the author is growing and becoming better. It was interesting to cross so many different elements in one book: ghosts, legends, smugglers, murder, romance, and surprises. Another unique thing about the book is that the heroine doesn't attach herself to the main hero and isn't free for pursuit. Most romances the heroine stays single until the very end or is thrown into a marriage in the beginning. The heroine and hero have to work through many surprises and obstacles. This book seemed like it was well planned and I am amazed that the author was able to keep so many different elements organized. There were also many different themes and lessons woven through the story: allowing for trust and love, trusting the person you are married too, love can conquer obstacles, and appearances can be deceiving. Havencross is a great book to read for fun and/or discuss in a book club. This book is also highly rated on Amazon. To learn more about Havencross, click here.
