Learning About Nature and Shapes

Wednesday, September 20, 2017

Two days a week my son is in a preschool co-op.  We also do our own preschool homeschool for an hour three days a week. Last week we talked about Nature and shapes. We did a nature scavenger hunt finding things in nature that corresponded with a shape: a circle, triangle and square. We then collected a few nature samples outside to make a nature collage on the letter N.

After we made the N collage, we talked about different types of shapes. We pressed shaped in paint onto paper using Washable Crayola Paint. I like using Crayola Washable Paint. It's easy to clean up and doesn't stain clothes. We got the idea from More Than Counting: Math Activities for Preschool and Kindergarten. I use this book for all of our math activities. It make math fun for toddlers and preschoolers. It also gives me guidelines in what questions to ask per each activity and adapting it for different levels. My kids love doing the activities from it.

We also worked on writing the letter N and learning about the color green. To go along with our theme, we read Plant the Little Seed by Christie Matheson. Plant the Little Seed tells how a seed grows into a plant. It's also interactive! Readers are asked to clap, tap, wave and more. It's such a fun book and great for younger audiences. I already put some of Matheson's other books on hold at the library and this might be adding it to our home library soon! To learn more about this book, click here.

What learning activities do you like to do with your preschoolers?
