Enid Hawthorne's grand adventure in Africa ends abruptly with her husband's untimely death. Enid boards a ship to head back to England to find refuge in the estate of her late husband's family. Upon her arrivals, she discovers a home drenched in mourning through the loss of her niece and sister-in-law. Her brother-in-law, the Earl of Thornewell, has pushed everyone away and when Enid arrives seeking asylum, he does his duty and nothing more. Will Enid and the Earl put aside their differences so that their hearts and grief will heal or will hidden secrets continue to drive them apart?

The heroine, Enid, in The Heart of Thornewell, pushes through numerous trials from losing her husband, trekking through Africa alone, traveling on the sea alone and facing her husband's brother who has his own inner struggles and heart aches. Enid's determination to survive is admirable and makes her a compelling character. I enjoyed reading about Enid's determination to survive and protect her unborn child. I also enjoyed seeing her interactions with the servants and her nephews. The different attractions/romances throughout the novel happened rather quickly for me while some of the drama seemed too prolonged. The prolonging of the drama seemed forced and a little unnatural to the telling of the story. The story was clean and geared for female audiences, aged teen - adult.
